Nah. The only other thing I can think of doing is ringing MS and asking for a new PID, but as the OEM XP install worked earlier I'm going to go the long winded route and install the drivers manually. Hopefully I'll be more successful. Thankyou very much for help smile Wish me luck.

Regards
David

Any ideas??? Like I said above installing in the VM via the OEM XP disc WORKS!!! (allow the PID), so I can only conclude that the slipstream process is causing the problems. I appreciate that I may be 'off topic' but I am determined to get this working???

Hi there! I've created a slipstreamed disc again, this time not entereing the PID in nLite. I tried running the resultant image in the VM and it still refuses to accept the PID. Not sure how to use WGA to register? Windows insists I enter a PID during the install? Here's a copy of the logfile that was created:

Thankyou

"OK the report is because nLite is creating $OEM$\cmdlines.txt. this causes base to do extended checking to see if it was previously installed."

Do I need to somehow stop nLite creating $OEM$\cmdlines.txt? Is base checking to see if 'itself' has been installed previously or Windows XP. Do I need to re-download DriverPacksBase (as it's possibly checking to see if it has been installed previously) and the DriverPacks again? Am I right in saying that WGA will already be installed on my machine? Sorry about all the questions.

What do I do next???

"Hint... The correct answer is I recopied my hologramed disc to the HDD"

Each time I created a new slipstreamed disc I followed the guide mentioned earlier on in my postings, ie, http://www.v3.co.uk/computeractive/feat … er-4007804. Each time I did this I specifically followed this section,

"...start by installing Nlite. Leave the default options as they are and after clicking Finish, the program will automatically launch.

After clicking Next at the welcome screen, you’ll be prompted to locate your existing installation files. Pop your XP installation disc into the drive, exit any welcome screen that may pop up, then click Browse to select your CD or DVD drive.

Nlite will prompt you to select or create a folder to save the modified files to: click OK, choose a folder on the hard disk and click OK again. Make sure the selected disk has enough free space available if you’re not integrating drivers, then 1GB should be ample; double this amount if you are.

Wait while the files are copied from the XP disc to the hard disk. Once complete, the existing installation (Windows XP, XP SP1 or XP SP2) will be identified. Click Next twice to arrive at the main menu screen, which is where you select the parts of Nlite you want."

So, I think that the 'source' that you mention was created new each time. I deleted the old one from my HDD.

"you MUST run DriverPacks last... You can make no, zero, none, zip, nada changes after DriverPacks"

I followed the guide to the letter and apart from actually creating the ISO, which I did with nLite after running DriverPacks (as directed by the guide), DriverPacks was run last? Is this correct? I'm still flummoxed?

" Since you did not submit the entire log all i have to go in is the two error lines... "

I wrote down the log 'on-the-fly' whilst it was being produced. I don't know how to reproduce it? There were some more lines, but I only copied the ones that looked negative? Here they are in their entirity:

"<Prep>\I386\winnt.org was not found, \I386\winnt.sif was not restored
<Prep>\Neither txtsetup.org or dosnet.org was found
The removal of any service packs we may have added with DriverPacks and or removal of mass storage textmode drivers was skipped
<Prep>Verified method 2 references dont exist in txtsetup.sif or dosnet.inf
<Prep>Cleanedup\$OEM$\cmdlines.txt..."

The following lines of the log began with '<Slip>' I think?

Thanks again smile

"I mean that DriverPacks has been run on that source before... but the backup files have been removed... DriverPacks BASE can no longer uninstall itself from that source. that means it is HOSED! It has orphaned files and corrupted files and missing files... (IE It is corrupted)"

Sorry, do I need to dl the DriverPacks and DriverPacks Base again then?

"you need to copy your OEM XP disc to your HDD and start CLEAN / OVER... "

This happens during Nlite process. Is that ok?

The XP install disc is the OEM disc that came with the machine (I've been using this throughout).

By clean source, do you mean a different XP install disc?

Hello! Back after a little hiatus. First I created a third slipstreamed disc with the latest drivers, again with textmode selected. Whilst the slipstream was being created, I noticed that in the progress box there were some interesting messages, I'll give you the first two lines (I can post more later if significant):

<Prep>\I386\winnt.org was not found, \I386\winnt.sif was not restored
<Prep>\Neither txtsetup.org or dosnet.org was found

Aldo the size of the resultant ISO was much the same as the first one I produced, ie, around 1GB (the second was a third less at around 600MB). Any ideas why this might be??? I've been looking into why the product key was been refused. It seems it's a common problem, as Googling the problem throws links from multiple sources, one of them being from Microsoft which might be useful to others with same problem, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310637. I tried the first four suggestions in this article to no avail. I then tried the following:

* removing the other two ISO's I'd created earlier, reasoning that because I'd got the first one working in a VM earlier (the product key was accepted), I might not be allowed to register the the same XP with the same product key again in another VM set up on the same machine? Hope that makes sense. Product key invalid

* installing in the VM via the OEM XP disc. THIS WORKED!!!

* trying the VM and ISO on another computer. Product key invalid

* tried the ISO using a different VM, ie, MS Virtual PC 2007. Didn't work. Didn't even get as far as entering the product key, the installation kept stalling just after Windows complained that it was low on Virtual Memory (it automatically increased the page file size itself). Each time the VM wasn't responding I left it for a good while until the only way of getting any responce was to shut the machine down by keeping my finger on the power button. btw, the stall occured whilst the drivers were being decompressed?

The only instances where I managed to get the VM working were:

1. creating the slipstreamed disc on the machine that I wanted to do the reinstall on (earlier you suggested I create the slipstream on the new machine, so I assumed it didn't make any difference which machine it was created on) and without the text mode option selected

2. installing using the OEM disc.

Is it safe to conclude that the problem must be something to do with the slipstreamed disc, ie, the drivers and/or their implementation?

Thanks for your time. smile

I realise that my problem has gone a little 'off topic' now, but would be very grateful for any suggestions or perhaps someone can signpost me to another forum that might be of help?

Many thanks

I tried it several times now and it's still not being accepted? Can't understand why?

I created the new slipstreamed disc with Nlite using the OEM Windows XP SP1 disc that came with the computer and XP SP3 downloaded from the web. I included the serial key in the 'unattended' part of Nlite. The serial key, I got from the sticker stuck to the old machine, so it must be genuine. I was thinking, maybe because I already created a virtual machine in VirtualBox using the same key earlier, maybe this could have something to do with it? But I deleted the virtual machine and HDD, so I don't understand why the key isn't being accepted? Should I try removing and reinstalling VirtualBox???

Thanx

*****Update*****

I've opened the case and 'thumbed' the drive cables and vacuumed the innards. I think I found out why the old machine was refusing to boot from CD/DVD, I didn't save the boot order settings before exiting the BIOS setup. Following your suggestion above , I decided to create another slipstreamed disc from scratch on the new machine. Also the old machine is refusing to play with the existing slipstreamed disc. As it is a DVD+RW, I thought maybe somthings been written to it during the previous install procedures and it's corrupt. This time I ticked the 'Textmode' box and noticed that some of the driverpacks had been updated, so I downloaded those as well. Having created an image on my HDD I noticed that the size of it was significanty smaller than the previous image I created, approx. one third smaller, is this something to do with Textmode???

I loaded up 'Sun VirtualBox' and removed the previous emulator I had set up, as well as deleting the virtual HDD I had previously setup. I then set up the new slipstreamed ISO image and started it, all looked well until Windows setup told me that the activation key I'd entered for XP, earlier in Nlite wasn't valid!??? yikes Another problem to compound the existing one/s! If knew how to put the emoticon for banging your head against a wall, it would be here. Any idea why this would be happening???

The new machine does have a burner, it's the old machine that doesn't. The laptop is completely seperate, I only brought this in to test the slipstreamed DVD on another machine. Emulator - I was thinking the same thing. smile May have something to do with Alcohol software?

Cheers

The slipstreamed image was created on the old machine transfered to the new machine via thumb drive and then burnt to DVD. AFAIK the DVD writer on the new machine works ok. I will replace the DVD drive in the old machine with a new one. Any idea why the computer appears to have two DVD drives? Also if the machine continues to 'act up' and I continue with the other hardware tweaks you suggested, ie, pulling devices, do I need to uninstall the drivers first???

Thanks again big_smile

Oh yes! After all that I just remembered can just go ahead and just disconnect devices without first uninstalling their drivers?

Cards on the table... wink Relatively speaking I'm a novice when it comes to computers, hence my reluctance to dive in and 'pop the lid'. Guess I can't be brilliant at everything wink Anyway, I've tried several more things since my last post (all without opening the case). I have in the following order Reset the BIOS to default, performed a memort test with the suggested software - which turned out to be ok (whilst I did this I monitored the CPU temp - 109F, chassis temp - 89F and fanspeed - 4623rpm using some software that came with the motherboard) and attempted to clean the lense of the DVD player (DVD with brushes). I say attempted because the DVD would not play properley, freezing and stuttering between frames. I then recalled that when I first aquired the machine I had problems playing back some DVD movies. To confirm this I loaded up several DVD movies, with some playing and some not. However, I don't recall ever having any problem with data DVD's.

I then tried to reboot the machine with the slipstreamed DVD. Now the machine was refusing to boot from DVD/CD completely. I wasn't even given the option. This is despite changing the boot device in the BIOS settings. Following this I tried to boot from the slipstreamed DVD on another machine, a laptop with XP Pro installed. I got to the setup screen and was reassured to see text flashing by at the bottom of the screen, until it got to the '...Universal Host Controller...' I was then presented with the following error message:

File usbhub.sys caused an unexpected error (18) at line 5964 in d:xpsp\base\bootsetup\setup.c.
Press any key to continue

and then

Setup failed. Press any key to continue

I don't understand why my computer appears to have two DVD players. I definitely only have one along with a CD writer? I've included the report from the HWID tool for your information:

I thought I'd try to takle the software tests first (easiest). Even though my HDD is a Samsung (as determined by Belarc advisor), I used Seatools to have a look at it as it says it's suitable for other brands of HDD. It appears to be healthy as it passed both a short and long tests. I would still like to test my DVD drive though, but as I said in my previous post I cannot find the tool suggested in one of the links. Can you suggest any alternatives?

"if you have any add in cards (modem sound etc) remove them temporarily."

I haven't touched the hardware yet. I know I have a modem card added, but the sound card is 'onboard'. I'm not really sure what I can remove or not? I think the best thing for me to do is post the HW part of the Belarc report I mentioned earlier and perhaps you could suggest which?

Out of curiosity I tried to boot the machine with the original hologramed OEM XP CD. This seemed to work ok as it progressed a lot further than the slipstreamed DVD. I exited the setup before it went too far. I don't know if this is significant?

Thanks

Hi! I've looked throught the links you provided. The website that the third link goes to provides other links to several hardware testing tools. I'm having a problem getting the second of them, which is entitled, 'Western Digital diag for CD'. I cannot find this application on the website. I googled DVD diag tools and amongst others, Nero CD-DVD Speed x.xx.x was suggested which I happen to have a copy of, is this adequate? I'm aware that it's been superceded now, but I have found a userguide to the old version?

You're right about my machine, it is an older machine and it does use IDE. Would it be helpful if I provide an HWID (hardware ID)? I have a report compiled by Belarc Advisor, is this the same thing?

I was wondering if when I set up the Driverpacks on the slipstreamed CD, whether I needed to allow the 'Textmode' option, as I didn't in the original setup?

Hi! I've just booted the machine with the slipstreamed DVD in the CD/DVD drive. What follows is a blow by blow account of what happened. Whilst the machine was booting it gave me the option to boot from CD, which I did. A black screen was presented with the message:

Setup is loading configuration files

This was replaced by a blue screen with 'Windows Setup' title at the top. Along the bottom of the screen various messages flashed up until eventually the message, 'Setup is loading kernel files DLL'. This displayed for a while until finally the following message was displayed:

File\i386\KDOM.DLL could not be loaded
The error code is 7
Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit

The installation did not get as far as rebooting like you suggested?

Thanks for your help.  smile

I wasn't continually at my computer while the installation took place (I think I was doing the vacuuming or something useful like that). As far as I know there was a blank screen for long time, followed by a blue screen with the title Windows Setup at the top of the screen. Again this was present for ages. The first message on the screen was:

Please insert disk labelled
Windows XP Home Edition SP3 CD into Drive A
Press enter when ready

I gave more detail on this above in an earlier post. I don't think I got as far as being instructed to reboot the machine?

To install the slipstreamed disc, I started with the slipstreamed disc. If you mean did I compile the slipstreamed disc using the hologramed OEM XP CD, the answer is yes.

Thanks for the explaination of the acronym. I looked at the status of my ODD via the device manager (the only way I know how to test it) and it reports that the device is working properly. I'll try to give you a little more info. I didn't select 'Text mode' as suggested in the official tutorial here:

"If you previously had to use the F6/floppy method to get access to your hard disk during Windows setup, make sure you select the Mass-Storage driverpack as well as check the "Text-Mode" option. Text-Mode integration will ensure that your RAID, IDE or SATA controller is correctly identified and supported by the Windows installer prior to installation. In other words, TEXTMODE is required if the Windows installer CD does not recognize your destination hard drive.

Select Text-Mode and you are saying "Bye Bye, Floppy".

for the following reasons:

1) I've never installed Windows XP on my machine because it came ready installed and I've never had to reinstall it, therefore I've never used the F6/floppy method and wouldn't know if I had to or not?
2) I do have a floppy disc drive installed on my machine, which I do not want to say 'Bye Bye' to. However, my computer did not come with any floppy discs that were needed for the installation to complete.

Looking at the sentence which mentions, "...your RAID, IDE, SATA controller is correctly identified...." I think I may have misunderstood here, so maybe I did need to tick this box, I'm still not sure?

At this point it may be worth me mentioning that I created the original image on my old PC. I then transfered this image to my new PC which has a DVD writer and tested it as virtual installation on 'Sun VirtualBox' which seemed to work fine.

I did as was suggested to me in the earlier post and burnt the image again using a slower speed and the disc was verified as ok. I then attempted to boot with it in the old PC's DVD drive. I pressed F11 during the setup to ensure my machine booted from the DVD drive. Eventually the Windows Setup screen was presented and the drived wizzed away for what seemed to be a long time and then displayed the following message:

Please insert disk labelled
Windows XP Home Edition SP3 CD into Drive A
Press enter when ready

Drive A is my floppy drive, so I ignored it and pressed enter anyway. The same thing happened again, so I exited and rebooted. I pressed F11 again during the boot sequence and changed the boot device to the hard drive. Whilst the machine was booting I pressed any key when given the option to boot from CD. Again the machine took ages and finally I was presented with the following message:

INF file txtsetup.sif corrupt or missing, status 8192
Setup cannot continue
Press any key to exit

So, I tried a third time using the last method described and got the following message:

File/i386.biosinfo.inf could not be loaded. The error code is 2
Setup cannot continue
Press any key to exit

And that brings me to where I am now. I don't have clue what's going on? Please help?
