So I reinstalled XP, and it didn't recognize the devices until I installed update kb888111 (right up there with George Foreman grills, Google is the greatest invention of all times), then followed kwin73's latest instructions step by step and now I have sweet, sweet sound. The modem driver didn't take but I don't care. Thank you all for your help. Have a good one.

Well I give up for now. I flashed the BIOS from XP and uninstalled most of the hardware from DM and the modem or audio device still wont show up. I might reinstall XP tomorrow. Thanks everybody for your help. Keep it up.

Yeah mine doesn't have the modem or audio device, did you do anything to get it to recognize those or was it always like that?

Ok, after seeing andante's HWID I got some more drivers and my unindentified devices were the TI Controllers, so now my HWID is the same as his. But, is your DM actually showing a Modem and HD Audio Device anywhere, because mine isn't. My sound, video and game controllers show "Audio Codecs, Legacy Audio Drivers, Media control devices, and Video Codecs". In Vista there is a modem section where the blah blah Modem is, and the HD Audio Device is under sound, video and game controllers. Do you think it's just not recognizing them in XP?

That one changes to "Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio" if I run the UAA, but the HWID is the same.

Which model? p105-s6147.

About the audio, I have 2 devices that are still unindentified in DM, the indented ones, and one that is ident. but has a problem (High Def. Audio Controller). I tried forcing (both ways) the drivers in all of them, the result is the same as I posted above.

Edit: In my Vista partition, the chipset is 950EG, but the driver for 945 is the closest I could find for XP, and it seems to work. I'll try looking for the 950EG if you think that might be the problem.

That ain't enough, you have to force even more. Try this:

- Unzip the drivers (remember the location)
- In Device Manager find the card, right click > update driver
- Choose "Not at this time" > Next > Install from a list ..... > Next
- Choose DON'T SEARCH. I WILL CHOOSE THE DRIVER TO INSTALL > Next

Then it depends on how the wizard will behave. It may find the compatible driver at once, or it may not. Here's what you have to do in the worst case:

- Choose Sound, Video and game Controllers > Next
- Click HAVE DISK and locate an INF file in the folder where you unzipped the driver
- Choose the only option from list and click Next > Finish
- Reboot
- Enjoy the silence big_smile, just kidding - enjoy sound!

Yeah I have already tried that with that one and all the HP drivers. When I select the INF file (BD1HDAa.inf in this case) I get " The specified location does not contain information about your hardware".

It's a miracle you guys, it's actually working...
- Regarding the audio driver, no HP or Microsoft UAUAUA worked. No Vista drivers worked, no other P105-S61xx drivers worked. F*** conexant for this of course, making it so f***ing complicated on purpose. However the driver for P100-ST9742 that farmdog_2007 pointed out does work. There IS sound and all the needed settings for sound in the control panel work. Couldn't fix the audio modem, but who needs that crap anyway? So thanks so much, this spared me loads of time. And of course the driver works on both the laptops.

Ok, I have a p105-6147 too, but I can't make it work. I got the Microsoft UA thing, which identified the "Bus Driver for High Definition Audio" in device manager, but it still shows a problem. Now you said that you used farmdog_2007's link, so I assumed you also "Forced the update of the XP Conexant sound driver". By "forced" does it mean doing this

Download and extract the modem zip file
Open the device manager
Right click on the modem
Click update driver
choose install from a list or specific location --> next
Click include this location in the search --> browse to where you unziped the file --> next

? I tried that, it says "The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software". Could you please clarify what you did with the driver? Thank you for your time.
