I'll try an English XP version, and after that I think I'll do no more KTD tests until a newer DpsBase becomes available.

the desktop.ini popup must be common enough for Microsoft to write an article about it...

observations;
KTD is not wanted by everyone.
KTD can be done in an existing windows, so if one wants to test all sorts of hardware kit in a machine, one could make a CD that has the files and a cmd script.

hi
localised settings were semicoloned out in winnt.sif
KTD all was done, and desktop.ini popped up

looked for files with 21787 in them in the windows folder
syssetup.inf has that string two times.
sysetup.inf has not been altered by anything, tho.
layout.inf has that string for shell.hlp but I dont think that one is relevant either.
desktop.ini was NOT found.
well, that figures, since it was moved out of windows ...

all in all, I am none the wiser.
FAIK, it is not triggered by settings in winnt.sif.

the disabler has to kill the DSP warning popup numerous times, and I imagine the help module comes with it.
maybe that this causes interference with other background processes.
Soon as desktop is loaded, these configuration update popups fly by,  and immediately after that the update ready tray icon is already showing.

I dunno what triggers this.
the double D perhaps? I guess we'll find out when that is fixed.

you weren't browsing the temp folder during slipstream, were you?

hehe, I done that couple times...

setup told me it had no access to the drive
it sees the combined size, while only half of the stripe is there, but it does see the drive...
I will abort, there is no sense in repartitioning this on wrong size.

your error looks different after all.
it does not see the drive at all, doesn't it?

Hi Fragbert

when you connect a RAID striped array to the ICH7R channels, and ICH7R is set to AHCI, and you boot to the hard disks... then you get an Error during Boot.
A disk Read Error occured,
press CTRL-ALT-DEL to restart.

That is perfectly normal.
A user should always see that, even when BIOS is set to Silent or Quiet.
(OEM screen hiding POST data on screen)

the drives are ready to be blanked, so I could launch setup from DVD.
I already know what happened when both drives were there and booted to DVD.
(The unnatended automatically formats, and it saw the full size of the array, and setup would then loop to setup when it did its first reboot.)

so I'll disconnect just one of the stripe, set this to AHCI, load the DVD, and see what happens..

hi
I hope this helps me when I get to working on these MSDN sources...
I happen to have OPK CDroms, and a couple days ago I saw a link in these forums pointing to downloadable OPK tool @ microsoft.

never too old to learn.

hi
have you used this one, Muiz3?

I heard some cards produced stutter. maybe this fixes it.

Hi
have you tried a new download of the mass storage pack yet?
the download you have could be corrupt?

btw, this is the first time I notice "FOR ATHLONXP" and "for intel and other integrated" in a log.

Well,
I was too optimistic.
changed setting to AHCI after windows got fully loaded, and it tries but fails to boot to windows...
changed it back, and I got the safe boot options screen.
(come to think of it, these single modes use a different driver, so this is understandable).

next is a striped RAID, then try a single drive out of the stripe.
Just found a twin to the 250 drive I ran in single mode. This one is probably fully loaded with data...
be patient, it will get tested tonite.

interesting... Holmes would say.

the drive that had run while ICH7R was set to AHCI was hooked up to a SIL3132 controller on the 955 mobo

RVM+ base 610 DVD... setup
it loops in reboots to setup after formatting/copying... drive is seen, but on a different controller, and its layout somehow triggers this.

will shut this down, and connect this single drive to the ICH7R chip, in default mode (RAID)
edit; done that, and windows is loading, Finisher started running.
On Same chip, in single drive mode, RAID or AHCI settings have same layout.

will change setting to AHCI after windows is fully finished, and do not expect error.

Oh, if it ever was a member of an array, and was not reset to NON-member, then it will still be a member disk.
I'm almost sure it would either show a wrong size, or an error, or maybe with the newest, not show up at all..

it is something I intend to find out, using the newest, and after this with my 5.00.1032.

testing a change like from AHCI to single disk on RAID setting should be easy.
in that 945, I recall it runs in AHCI right now?
All I have to do is connect it to a monitor and get in BIOS..

At the moment, I have to free up a used 250 Gb drive so as to have two "erasables".
(I do not want to crack the wrap on the new ones if I do not have to.)

the 945 testrig has three unconnected drives, one of wich only contains some data I think I have on other drives as well, but I will first look at it before I start messing on it.
the other two in there are a RAID running windows X64, which could actually be erased.
(I think I will not keep on using any OEM X64 windows versions after al. This one was installed many months ago, and can already be activated in other rig with no problem, so I could sell it as used but usable.)

.the 955 rig will run a first test on a single sata in twenty minutes or so.
(I want to test for the desktop.ini error, with locale settings removed from winnt.sif)
with any luck, I will run four or six tests tonight.

in mass storage driverpack, intel folder = IN

D\M\IN\1\O has Version 5.5.0.1035
its parent folder D\M\IN\1\ has 6.1.0.1002

Version 6 has this section
[ControlFlags]
ExcludeFromSelect=PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2822&CC_0104
ExcludeFromSelect=PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27C6&CC_0104
ExcludeFromSelect=PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2682&CC_0104
ExcludeFromSelect=PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_27C3&CC_0104
ExcludeFromSelect=PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2652&CC_0104

but after that all these devices do get a section...

thinking aloud.
set BIOS to use AHCI...
if these are new hard drives, they should always be seen and be usable

if these were previously set up in RAID array, they should not get seen at all.
(I actually think this is BEST. One is forced to look at this, and has to decide to delete the array, and the data on it. The old one that Gigabyte provided, 5.0.0.1032, saw wrong size, killed the data, then failed.)

just an observation.
in the new box I fired up this morning, the BIOS default settings for all three chips is RAID.
A large percentage of end users never look at BIOS settings, let alone change them..
I think AHCI does not give any speed benefit.
when the chip is set to RAID , it does not have to have member disks in an array. They can all be independant disks.

one of the tings I will try is set one up on iastor in AHCI, then change setting to RAID, and see wether it boots.

when I get it, all I do is get to start, programs menu, and Rightclick/delete it out of startup...

have just built the Royale machine.
Unfortunately, the shop had used the ATI card I had ordered for a quick repair, and I got an Nvidia 7300GT with some discount.

interesting mobo for tests, I dare say
it has IT8212F  (Raid 0+1 or JBOD), has ICH7R (0+1 and 5), and SIL3132 (0+1), which makes connections possible for 6 IDE drives and six SATA...
the case can accommodate plenty drives...
this will become a workhorse after I tested its guts.
it had HDaudio too... what better things to do for burnin tests than running variants of setup with various builds.

and yes, with RVM hotfixes and addons, plus base6086 these updating screens also come up (one of wich is updating desktop), but the ini does not launch in notepad.
(did not do KTD with 6086. the first test was with a really slow hard drive, so I could see what came up... with RAID drives in it it just goes a little too fast to read the updating popups)

I can change cuz I know my old...

OOPS
post 21 proves my memory is not reliable

winnt.sif somehow triggered the corruption of svcpack.in_

the desktop.ini launching from startup in programs is triggered by something I have not found yet....

the offending desktop.ini normally resides at

C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Menu Start

this somehow gets to
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Menu Start\Programma's\Opstarten
from where it launches.

my winnt.sif has settings to set locale, so that may trigger it.

EDIT;
THIS IS A WRONG REPORT <<
no winnt.sif, no desktop ini
no KTD, no winnt.sif, no desktop ini
KTD, no winnt.sif, no desktop ini
winnt.sif, desktop.ini<<
END WRONG REPORT

next I will get rid of the localisation in winnt.sif, even when I would have to localise during setup...

Mr Sue Yang smiles

Hi Zac_Caz

you need driverpack BASE to integrate the mass storage driverpack into a copy of your CDRom

copy CD to folder
run base610 download
copy mass storage download to driverpacks folder in the folder where you let base extract to
I would also get chipsets driverpack, and put that in there as well.
then you can run DPsBase

you have to use TXTmode

make a bootable ISO from that slipstreamed copy
after this, you burn yourself a bootable CD
and it should be able to see the hard disk.

Hi Wim
NO, ITE does not have to be disabled in BIOS to run on the AHCI
(I hope it is useful that I learned that I had to disable it to get access to intel raid setup)

edit; and I think the intel mobo does not have the ITE raid chip...

edit 2;
I also learned that if one wants to change to AHCI while a RAID array has been in use, one must first delete the array... Not exactly data friendly.

Hi Wim
yes, to get to the RAID setup utility for my INTEL ICH7R chip, I had to disable ITEraid.
(otherwise I would not get the CTRL-I option during boot. It would only show CTRL-G for Gigabyte aka ITEraid)

with AHCI, there is no CTRL-I option at all, and after deleting the array, the two non-member SATA drives are still connected.
Setup used one of them.

hi
forum password, has no password forgotten option?
I see my email listed, but there is no link to request sending a new password. (in case I forget mine)

I searched my email folders, and did not see one what had sent me the verification email with password so many other BBS systems send.

since you are planning some BBS overhaul, this could be added?
Mikhelm might be less miffed...

I also have a suspicion that this BBS software is not exactly botproof, and think harvester bots can get to email adresses.

Oh dear,
I think I know how Mikhelm feels.

there's that other thread, where I started that elimiation process by using halves of half.
Back home, when I was doing exactly that, I almost started swearing at myself because, well, because...
When I thought it over, I figured out where I broke the process, so I dood it all over.
But I would still bust my head against the wall when the process broke for reasons I could not remedy nor look into.
However, I don't swear at Wim.
I dragged an 95 year young bloke off the street and vented my frustrations on him...
Little did I know he got called Sue...
Mr Yang is now my sensei...

btw, opened a new one in forum feedback

Hi
next thing I tried was to set up the drives in RAID array while in AHCI
AND THAT CANNOT BE DONE.

summary of the event.
when changed from RAID setting to AHCI when the RAID had been used to run an array...
Then the drives were still member disks of an array,
OLD version... setup would see the combined size, format the old array, and when reboot happened, drive was not seen.
NEWER version
the array not seen, period.

exit AHCI.
I want the speed of an array.

Hi Fragbert

it is currently running setup with version 6.xxx floppy

it wouldn't see the drive, at first.
but, then I followed up on the suspicion I had.
went into RAID configuration. (BIOS)

to get to the intel BIOS setup screens, I had to disable ITEraid in BIOS(Gigabyte mobo calls it GiGaRaid)
then, I had to set the intel chip to RAID to be able to delete the array.

Then I set it to AHCI
(not in a RAID config, at the moment)
and V6xxxx did allow me to access the now blanco drives
we'll see how it reboots in ten minutes...

edit; it is not an intel mobo, but I could report at intel as it does have an intel chipset ...
setup asked me for the windows key (next time I will use a semi-unattended)

edit 2; windows loaded on a single drive

next thing I will try is to set up the drives in RAID array while in AHCI

hi
5.5.1035 is worse than my old one
it does not even get to formatting... setup won't see the satadrives nor an array.
(I should look wether the array is still an array...)
non combined, ditto. no drives seen.

definately not a Bâshrat the Sneaky error...
just got the newest F6 image using the links posted above.

this must be an old gripe with many...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AHCI

new combined floppy made
will test right away.

txtsetup.oem now looks like this
