Nothing really worked, I'm upgrading to Windows 7 after all.

You'll notice that Sony themselves don't support XP with that model.
If the manufacturer doesn't have a XP driver, finding a workable driver elsewhere will be like finding a needle in a haystack.

Upgrade to Win7 and call it a day. You'll be much happier.

Manually update the driver in Windows Device Manager
(Update Driver - Install from Disk - Don't Search - Have Disk).
Ensure any important data is backed up first.
Restart Windows.

If that doesn't work, uninstall that driver using Add/Remove Programs.
Manually try the drivers (Device Manager)one at a time in DP_SoundB_wnt5_x86-32_1111\D\S\I or I8, Im, In, or Ip.

Running the setup.exe displays this error.

I also tried to right click STWnRT.INF and click install which I think worked but I see a Windows Service named SigmaTel Audio Service that cannot start.

It displays an error indicating the service started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically
if they are not in use by other services or programs.

So you're saying that you tried the driver from Sony here and it didn't work?

The .inf has XP indicators in it.

I can't get Sound to work on SONY VGN-AR71S with Windows XP Pro SP3.

HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8384&DEV_7664&SUBSYS_104D2200&REV_1002

I have searched on google and tried suggestions but still no sound.

Sound works only with Windows Vista / 7 for this laptop?

I am frustrated.

Could you help me please?
