I have had similar results with the non-WHQL'ed Ultra.inf driver from \D\M\P\ v2.0.0.43
The Win2k & Win2k3 drivers from the fore-referenced driver are also non-WHQL'ed (last WHQL driver presumably was pre-v2.0.0.42 dated latter-2002).

One performance difference i have noted so far is a slight increase in CPU usage (24% average for the same DVD+RW disc - only testing 1 LG optical drive for now).
The write speed & cpu usage went haywire about halfway through the burn with an average of 1.2x and the cpu usage all over the map. The verify had good read spead (15MB/s), unfortunately
not without read errors (11). I will try another fresh DVD+RW to see if i obtain the same results. ....Coming Soon!

Later, i will test the vista driver on xp & report results; i have found no applicable driver on Windows Update Catalog.
I will use a test computer rather than my main machine as this may not work (i sense mr_smartepants evacuating to a safe distance...:)) *** Do not try this at home!!!

If i note no improvement in the write speed/Buffer of a DVD+RW, i will skip further testing for XP. No sense trying to solve this yet.

After an install, i have v5.1.2600.5512 with ultra.sys v1.43(build 0603) instead.

To be fair; it is an ultra -> fasttrak100 mod that i have presumably reversed to be an ultra once again.
If the HWID for it doesn't jive (PCI\VEN_105A&DEV_4D30&CC_0180), then this may be my error.
ok, i've found a reference here: http://www.911cd.net/forums/lofiversion … 16941.html, so my HWID is likely not in error.

I did experience a problem burning a disc to DVD with the stock XP driver; the device buffer kept filling & emptying, and the record speed was 1.4X instead of 4X.
Disc reading appeared to work at full speed (11MB/s). I am told that the BIOS associated with this series of Promise controllers is limited to 137GB, yet either driver will handle up to 2TB in Windows. (unconfirmed by me)

I will venture to retry this with driver v2.0.0.43, then this Vista WHQL driver --> http://firstweb.promise.com/upload/Supp … driver.rar
 if necessary, with the goal of reporting my findings.

===========
