I took a screenshot of the desktop, then I saved it, then I set it as background and hid all the desktop icons.

There's always the HID USB mouse prank: http://zedomax.com/blog/2007/04/20/garr … nk-device/

Another prank involves a HID keyboard & micro-controller dongle, installed into the end of a busted usb cable. It looks to the average person as a usb cable ripped in half.
Plug it in to someones machine (good luck finding it in a bundle of wire!) & it will wait for the machine to be idle for 3 minutes, & then start a macro to say, move the mouse around, open up programs. When the user interacts, the timer resets.

On the April Fool's front a friend of mine did something similar to the 'snapshot desktop, hide icons and taskbar' trick above to a colleague at his works. As an added twist he also created folders named 'P0rn' and 'Beastiality' on the desktop before he took the snapshot image.

Apparently it took his workmate/victim a VERY long time to work up the courage to contact IT Support...

I once did a prank sorta like the broken monitor wallpaper...I took a screenshot of the desktop, then I saved it, then I set it as background and hid all the desktop icons (including recycle bin)

When somebody double clicked on what they thought was a icon on the desktop nothing would happen (because it was just a picture of the icon)
