Okay! Will keep in mind, though I hate having to reinstall all the software and games, and do the copying of saved files, etc.. I do have an anti-virus installed. I use AVG. Usually I just delete all infected files, which is why sometimes the Windows system files also go missing. And that's where I came in .. heh.

Yep, already got the drivers, like I said. Just wanted to point out that the driver packs don't contain that particular file. I still haven't understood why the installer asks for that file, because if there's no drivers, it should not ask for the file. But I'm sure I'm missing something due to not being knowledgeable. Anyways, there won't be many folks still using out-dated equipment like me, heh.

The windows installer contains some drivers, but it doesn't install all the files for the WDM set, which my card seems to need. Whether it is asking for the CTLFACE.SYS file because of some issue with me making an upgrade install, I don't know. Maybe with a fresh re-install it might not ask for that file. But, the fact is, the windows drivers are very buggy like I said before, and the WDM set seems to work perfectly, so I'd rather go with them.

Anyways, enough rambling. Sorry I took so long to reply. And thanks a lot for taking the time and effort to get me up to date on the issue. Once again, thank you all for an excellent utility.

Trying to perform a repair install on an infected system will result in two infected OS installs!
Clean install is the best method.
If you can't wipe the drive because you'd lose the contents (backup, backup, backup!), Then buy another drive and install to that. Then before you connect your old crusty drive, make sure to install a decent anti-virus app first and scan/clean your old drive.

But, that Creative card isn't supported in the current DriverPacks. You'll have to download the old drivers from Creative's site.

Hm. Well, I'm using a fresh copy of Win XP, *but* I'm doing an upgrade, not a fresh install, just to refresh all the files, because I download a lot of stuff, and I keep getting viruses that over-write files in my /windows/system32 directory. Sorry if this created confusion, I should have mentioned it earlier.

The drivers were already loaded on my system from before by trial & error method way back when. I don't know if an upgrade is supposed to reload the same driver which was previously loaded, or whether it asks for the driver because it specifically needs the one that was already loaded in the previous install. The WDM drivers I mentioned was because that's what the Creative Labs calls the directory they are in, when I look inside the .exe using 7Zip. I should mention that the regular (i.e. non-WDM) drivers don't work, or are buggy, from what I remember. I have no idea what WDM means, but Google shows that WDM stands for "Windows Driver Model". Beyond this I'm lost.

But, even assuming that it asks for the file because it was already loaded previously, shouldn't it just find a new file from the sound driver packs that works and stick it in when I do the install process again (even if it's an upgrade)? I don't know if I'm making sense. But shouldn't the driver packs "recognize" the card and have *some* driver files that are appropriate for the card? Which is where I came in, saying either there's some error, or the file is missing.

Sorry, but I'm not really up to date on stuff, so I hope I'm able to explain what I'm trying to say.

Hang on a minute.
Are you starting over using a fresh UNTOUCHED XP source or are you using a disc made by someone else?
That file isn't in the DriverPacks so this isn't a DriverPacks issue.

I'm not technically very gifted, so I don't know if I will be able to answer perfectly.

But it's the last driver that the original install sequence used to ask for before I tried the integrated install. It used to load the mass storage drivers first, then the motherboard, then the display, and then, last, the sound card ones. After that, the installer used to go into the next stage, i.e. configuring (if I remember correctly). As far as I can make out, it's called the WDM drivers for SB Live! Value. The ones that I use right now (that I have on my HDD), are from Creative Technology (i.e. Creative Labs, the original vendors), so it means I prolly got them from their website sometime in the past.

It's an original Creative Labs add-in card (though prolly the cheapest available at the time ), purchased box-packed from a retailer way back when. I still use it because except for needing the drivers, it still works perfectly. I don't upgrade very regularly, because I don't play the very latest games. The original drivers for this card, those that came with the card inside the box pack, were buggy and used to keep crashing / hanging. The ones that I have currently (they are in the .exe file on my HDD) work flawlessly, and I don't remember the card crashing / hanging because of a sound error in a long time.

Well, that HWID (PCI\VEN_1102&DEV_0002) isn't supported by any of the DriverPacks.
Odd.
At what stage (T-36, etc) of XP install is that file asked for?
Is this an add-in card, or built-in controller?

Am enclosing the full HWIDS.txt file below. Not sure if I should leave out anything, so have not edited out the rest of the stuff.

The CTLFACE.SYS file was loaded from an installer archive I had got from the net a while back. Don't remember where I got them though. I don't know how to upload the file here, and anyway it's a big exe file. Just wanted to point out that the CTLFACE.SYS file seems not to be in the sound driver packs.

I've got the latest driver packs, and the latest DPBase release versions all downloaded on March 30, 2009. I was trying to make a Universal CD. I loaded all the driver packs together in method 2. There was also an error in the mass storage driver pack, but I was able to find the workaround on the forum and did the correction and recompiling myself. I did try a search in the .ini files in the sound driver packs, but was not able to locate the CTLFACE.SYS file.

The DPBase logs, etc., are on another PC in a different location, so I am not able to post them here right now. If you think they are really necessary, I will try to get them onto here.

I did have an issue with lots of DPFnshr and other files in root dir when KTD is set to on, but I am not sure if that is a feature or a bug, so I'll wait until I learn more and keep that for later. For the moment I've just made a new disc without KTD. Hopefully I won't have to see the DPFnshr files at all after the next installation

Btw, the last SCSI drive is a VirtualCloneDrive software drive that I use for loading and reading ISOs etc..

I have an SB Live Value! sound card installed. It asks for CTLFACE.SYS when I install Win XP after the driverpacks are loaded. I checked the databases, the file is missing from the list. Maybe you need to add it or there is an error.
