I will update V1 Via Rhine II driver instead, the generic HWIDs will cover your D-Link driver. D1 folder will be removed as well.

editing the inf will break signing. We try not to do that because signing is our freind.

put another way you cant update an included windows driver (automaticaly) unless the upgraded driver is signed.

that is a very old card - does the new driver make it any faster

It should also be possible to edit the .inf file that's included with the latest Realtek 8139 LAN driver.
Add the line:
%RTL8139.DeviceDesc% = RTL8139x.ndi, PCI\VEN_1106&DEV_3043&SUBSYS_14001186 :D-Link
to the .inf file.
