Thing is, 64bit applications also take up more space on the HDD and more RAM than their 32bit counterparts.
While you finally can address more than 4GB on a 64bit OS, this should also be taken into consideration when you want to switch.

Of course, you could still use 32bit apps, but then the question araises, what's the use?

if you will notice you local ads in the paper and mailings most every one is now offering vista 64
since 64bit processors are last years technology they are standard now. (so are 32 bit OS's and software)
there is not much benifit to the 64bit hardware except in extreme cases (autocad, gaming, ect)
Software and driver support for 64bit is severely lacking, but will catch up soon (but only for aplications that actually will benifit).
email, word and paint are not going to run any better even if they were 64bit

They can be used:
http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/view/web/34/

Though I'm a little confused about how a 32bit operating system would use a 64bit driver.
Let me get this right... if you are using Windows XP 32 bit Operating System on a 64 bit processor, everything's ok, because processor is backwards compatible... see example:
http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1665

So, if you are using a 32 bit operating system, it doesn't matter that you have 64 bit hardware: you should use 32 bit drivers to match the operating system <- Is this statement correct?

AFAIK, the consumer market for new hardware selling is still focused on 32 bit?

[edit]
Ok: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86-64#Windows
http://www.overclock3d.net/news.php?/ga … ter_2008/1

[edit #2]
What about the upcoming Windows 7 ??? (supposedly 2010)
Quote: "The client versions of Windows 7 will ship in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions."
Quote from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7

The question is, what will retailers sell as a majority of units: 32-bit Win7 or 64-bit Win7? (what will manufacturers provide and why?) This will determine if 64-bit OS is adopted as mainstream.
