Just my opinion, but as there is no single working XP driver for the Conexant 221 it probably shouldn't be added anyway.

I've spent a solid week searching so I know it's not out there for public download. I can tell you with 100% certainty that not even Conexant provides a 32 bit XP driver for the 221. Their generic driver page only has modem drivers. Also, Windows/Microsoft Update recognizes the hardware, but fails to install the proper driver.

From this experience, I can only assume that HP has done something rather unorthodox in their implementation of the Conexant audio/modem chipset.

Since the Intel HDMI driver works, I assume HP has somehow tied the Conexant chipset into the Intel GL40 Northbridge.

I can't figure out why the Vista driver that HP provides doesn't work for XP, as there's nothing that's obviously Vista-specific in any of the Vista files. In fact, it apparently originally supported 32 & 64 bit XP & Vista. Check this out, it's from IPathVXS.INI in SP39902.exe, the official Vista driver for the Compaq I worked on:

[Version]
Signature         = "$CHICAGO$"
DEVTYPE_UIU_INI_FILE = 1

[INSTALL_PATH]
WINXP      = "XP32\Setup.exe"
WINXP64    = "XP64\Setup64.exe"
WINVISTA   = "V32\Setup.exe"
WINVISTA64 = "V64\Setup64.exe"

The XP folders have been removed from the package. This tells me that HP does indeed have the XP drivers, they just won't release them.

I'll have to wait until the owner of the laptop does a clean install before I find out anything new. As I'm the one who makes his unattended XP disc, I also get his error reports. Unfortunately it could be months before he does a clean install or it could be next week, who knows.

I've sent him a message, so maybe he will let me play around some. If I learn anything new on this issue, I'll report back here. Maybe someone around here has a few tricks up their sleeves or knows someone at HP and can get a link to the XP drivers since we know they exist.

Just so I know, exactly what info is needed as confirmation that a particular driver works?

Perhaps I can help with this one. Just a few days ago I dug up XP drivers for a Compaq Presario CQ50-209WM laptop and got everything working, including audio and microphone.

This laptop has the Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 (HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_14F1&DEV_5051). I don't remember where I found the driver (I think it was Driverguide.com), but it's version 3.47.00 and does not include the .cat file, even though it's supposed to be there. I installed this and sound worked fine, but not the microphone. The only files in this driver are the following:
CHDAud.sys
UCI32A21.dll
UIU32a.exe
WiSVHe5.inf

After extensive searching and trial and error, I finally stumbled upon the solution. Turns out the Intel HD Audio HDMI driver that's included as part of Intel's GMA drivers is the solution. I used the Intel GMA 4500M Graphics v14.37.0.5009 driver, as it's the latest for this hardware.

The HDMI driver version included is 5.10.00.1047

I installed it after the Conexant driver and suddenly the yellow mark in device manager was gone and the microphone works.

Now this laptop has full audio function.

I don't yet know for sure if both drivers must be installed or just the Intel HDMI driver. The laptop in question doesn't belong to me and I don't have physical access to it, only remote access. I'll be sure to report back on that when I find out, although I'm positive both need to be installed.

No other "solution" I tried works, including Toshiba drivers.

Also, there is an XP version of sp39902.exe (version 4.58.0.0 A) buried on HP's site for this hardware that will not install properly. It's not needed and in fact all it does is provide an audio control panel.

And just an FYI: If you have service pack 3 integrated into your XP install cd, then you don't need to install any Microsoft UAA driver as it's part of SP3.
