I've searhced for the HWID, it's in 2 INF.

8221w32.inf

and

b57win32.inf

Dell 810 should use b57win32.inf, if my logic is right windows detects the file alphabetically starting with the number so 0-9 A B C etc... So 8221w32.inf gets installed in your case I guess.

Im sure if you install the broadcom driver manually it's working like a charm. To be honest with you I have no clue where the 8221w32.inf came from...it's not even on broadcom web site. I'll work on a fix.

Try removing \DP_LAN_wnt5_x86-32_71227\D\L\B3 folder and let me know if it's working. I compared both inf, 8221w32.inf is dated 2005 and contains less HWIDs. I will probably delete the whole folder in the next nightlie, I need feedback 1st do.

In setupapi log I get this (despite packs being present) during install
[2008/01/09 11:00:26 500.161 Driver Install]
#-019 Searching for hardware ID(s): pci\ven_14e4&dev_1677&subsys_01861028&rev_01,pci\ven_14e4&dev_1677&subsys_01861028,pci\ven_14e4&dev_1677&cc_020000,pci\ven_14e4&dev_1677&cc_0200
#-018 Searching for compatible ID(s): pci\ven_14e4&dev_1677&rev_01,pci\ven_14e4&dev_1677,pci\ven_14e4&cc_020000,pci\ven_14e4&cc_0200,pci\ven_14e4,pci\cc_020000,pci\cc_0200
#-198 Command line processed: C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe
#-166 Device install function: DIF_SELECTBESTCOMPATDRV.
#W059 Selecting best compatible driver failed. Error 0xe0000228: There are no compatible drivers for this device.

Afterwards, when I select the 'ethernet controlller' in device manager, it searches and finds drivers fine (and all looks good in the setupapi log too, looking and ranking the various broadcom drivers) - I had a look in the \Bx dir's and all looks fine to me...very odd

I have replicated problem with Dell D810, edit - (same problem with drivers going back to 09/07 [oldest ive tried with]). This one ends up with yellow exclam in device manager, searching for a new driver manually however its ok, although that defeats the object.
VEN_14E4&DEV_1677&SUBSYS_01861028

I just read the DP_LAN log and you mention renaming the \B3 .cat file, am I right in thinking the .cat file signs the .inf referencing its own name, so if you change the .cat files name in the inf, the cat file no longer validates it?
