Well, I do end up reinstalling windows XP at least once a month or so, and I try to keep up on the latest drivers...  I keep a copy of driverpacks on my USB drive (along with email, pics, mp3s, and other important stuff).

When I get home, I can get all the HWIDs from my home system(s)...  I am not sure my fiance would want me messing with her system too often...

So to make this long story short... SURE!!!

PS...  you guys might think about splitting up the MassStorage driverpacks into RAID and Non-RAID sections...  might help some people avoid conflicts like this one...

When I first obtained my Silicon Image 3132 pci-express SATA card, I downloaded the IDE emulation BIOS file and flashed the card.  When I tried to install windows XP to the SATA drive connected to this card (never had any problems installing to the motherboard SATA, but that supported 1.5G), it either errored out with BSOD or refused to install.  I noticed that the driver that was used during the textmode install was the 3132 SoftRaid5 driver (which I had flashed to the SATA-IDE emulation), so it wouldn't work correctly.  I also couldn't install windows with the onboard SATA chip and then switch it to the PCI-e card without BSOD..

MY SOLUTION!!!!!      I found with my Silicon Image 3132 card, that I had to unzip the driverpack, edit the inf files to REMark out the listings for the versions of the 3132 that I did not want to use, and rezip the driverpack with 7zip. Once I did that it worked fine, and I was able to install windows XP to my SATA drive instead of my PATA drive... 

If I remember correctly, I used the 7.09 version of the mass storage driverpack...

If anyone else has (or had) this problem, I would be happy to share my solution.

We know that updating the BIOS is not always possible. Silicon Image Flash tool does not flash other OEM solutions built around their chips.

That's no longer true.
Yesterday I found they now provide flashtool for system boards using their chips.
However, the latest BIOS version for an add-in card can be higher, and can have a higher version of driver specific to it.

I am working on a workaround in the hopes it solves the problems this can cause users.

what does the silicon image page tell us here?
For SiL 3132 we have FIVE different BIOS versions to look at, and I just looked at the HWID ranges these drivers cover.

The newest driver for latest BIOS still lists HWIDs we already saw in the OLDEST driver for oldest BIOS.
