I wasn't aware of any sound DRM in XP actually, even with this patch.

Nope. Compatibility & stability are more important than the illusion of "The Good" in fighting against large companies by not using anything that relies on DRM or even supports it. If you don't want DRM, uninstall Windows Media Player as well. And the codecs for it. And don't even use Windows, because they support and use DRM. And...

The point is: where will it stop? I will not sacrifice system stability for this "noble" goal.

My soundcard ( Realtel HD audio ) need this, otherwise i have no sound.

I had a hunch about KB888111 having to do with DRM, so I searched and found this:

don't install this, if it is installed, remove it.
listen to some of the "features" in it.

â€¢ Improved security of the content that you want to help protect
â€¢ Easier phase-out of products that are at the "end of life"
this hotfix caused glitches
who wants to help protect content? they mean, they are building DRM into the drivers.
and this allows OEMS like creative to stop making drivers for older products.
this is severely bad for consumers.
and especially bad for SB users.

May I ask if there is a way to keep functionality without adding any DRM stuff? Are there open source DRM decoders available that could be slipstreamed instead?
